What to Say When Someone Wants Info on Your Run Coaching Services

Dec 6, 2024 4 min read

Good news – someone asked about your run coaching! You either got an e-mail, a private message, or someone filled out a form on your website and they may want to hire you!

But now what?

Most run coaches are tempted to give information right away. Maybe even word vomit a long paragraph with info or send a link to their website. Maybe something like: “Yes I’d love to share more! I give you a custom schedule & we work together closely (you can message me anytime!). It costs $150/month, does that sound good?”

3 Questions a Runner is Asking Themselves When Hiring a Run Coach

Let’s take a step back first. There are 3 things that they are asking themselves as they try to decide if you are going to be the right coach for them:

1. Does she know how to help me?

2. Can I trust him? (And…do I like her?)

3. Can I actually do this?

If ONE of these pieces is missing, they will not sign up with you.

How do you communicate these things?

You must prove to them in your content, your conversations and your actions in order to get them to want YOU was their coach.

Heres what you should do when a runner inquires about your coaching services, to improve your odds that they choose YOU.

  • Step 1: Thank them and take control of the conversation.
    • Yes I’d love to share more about my coaching with you! I have a few options – do you mind if I ask you some questions first to see what’s the best fit?
  • Step 2: Ask Questions and Dig Into Responses By Asking More Questions.* Here are some questions you can start with:
    • What is your goal?
    • Why do you want it?
    • What have you tried before?
    • What do you feel like is holding your back most from achieving your goal? (& why)
    • How did it (what you tried) work out for you?
    • Why are you wanting to do this now?
  • Step 3: Summarize their goals & problems and repeat it back to them.
    • Ex: Your goal is X but you tried Y and it didn’t work. Is that right?
  • Step 4: Share why your coaching can help them specifically.
    • I totally understand why because you’re missing Y…. which my coaching will help you with for XYZ reasons.
  • Step 5: Clearly help them move to the next step (discovery call)
    • Do you want to schedule a call to learn more & see if it’s a good fit?
    • Would tomorrow work (choose a day or 2 for them, even if you send calendar)?

*Some of this can be done on a discovery call.
